Two female cats

My husband, who lived in Germany for three years and five months, brought his female cats home with him. I've had our other two - one male and one female - with me. The two female cats (one five and one seven) HATE each other. Is there anything we can do so they will get along? One lives upstairs and one lives down stairs.

Thank you.

RESPONSE:

We would really need more information in order to help with a specific course of action. How long since the move? Do the cats fight when they are in the same room together? Is one trying to intimidate the other? What behavior is displayed that lets you know they hate each other? Is one of them not eating or staying hidden all the time? Do they seem happy living in separate areas of the house?
If both cats are eating good, enjoy spending time with their people, get involved in interactive play, and otherwise seem healthy and satisfied, we probably wouldn't do anything. You can't force cats to like each other any more than you can force people to be friends. If both were the alpha cat before coming together, they may have simply staked out their territory and are quite happy there.
If the move was fairly recent, the one that has moved in may be upset by the move and is simply avoiding the other cats.
We really more information. Please give us more details regarding what is happening. You can do this easily by clicking on the "Add a Comment" link to add this info. Once we know more we can provide you with some ideas that may help depending on what's going on. If you prefer, you can contact us directly by clicking the "Contact Us" button and sending an email. Either way, we will do our best to help!
