tiny female reekes havic and mahem on 15lb. male incessently.

by cathileen
(medford oregon usa)

baby is a 3yr old, 15lb. neutered male i have had since he was a baby. i recently brought home a tiny full grown, spayed female, called mousakist. she continually picks on baby, chasing him through the house with him yowling and screaming like a banche was on his tail. a couple of times i think they may have been actually engaged in a physical fight. i have three other cats and she does not bother them at all. baby is the alpha, by age and time and i will not have him treated this way. he has always been a lover not a fighter. i just don't know how to deal with her only picking on him......and why???!!! please!! can anyone one help me with this dilema? i truly feel that if baby would fight back, just once, this nonsense would stop. he is 3X bigger than her!!!

RESPONSE:

Yes, if Baby would fight back, the little one would stop but at his age and temperment, it is doubtful this will happen. Try isolating the young one so Baby will feel safer. We use a bathroom with a screen door on it so the cats can see and smell each other but not engage. We have a couple of cats that feel so comforable in there that they often sleep there even with the door open. The young one needs more play time to help her burn off energy. When Baby and the young one are in the same room together, give them treats. Make sure they eat in seperate areas from each other as well. Switch places periodically so that Baby is in the isolation room so they get used to each other's smell. It takes time but eventually, the young one should calm down.
