Sudden changes in old cat behavior to new cat
(Nebraska)
We have a 3 year old spayed, front declawed Siamese (Esther), and a 4 year old neutered Golden Retiever (Sampson) who are best friends. About 3 months ago a stray wandered into our yard. She is about 2-3 years old, front and back declawed, spayed and really sweet. (Naomi) The cats seemed to get along fine after the introduction period. As the weather has started to get nicer, Esther wants to go outside all the time. We have a 6ft fenced in backyard, but she routienly jumps the fence and wanders around the neighborhood. Obviously we don't want her doing that!! But when we keep her in the house she gets so mad, that she starts lashing out at Naomi. She walks around the house growling, and when she sees the other cat she hisses and bats at her. She growls at us, but never the dog! Is this just because she is mad about not going outside, or is she regressing towards the new cat?
RESPONSE:
Esther is bored. She has energy to burn and when she can't go out, she experiences frustration and takes it out on the eeasiest target. Play with her more. This will help her burn off her energy. Play with the 2 cats together. After play, offer treats. You could also purchase a type of fencing that goes on top of your existing fence that will keep Esther from climbing out. That way, she can go outside but not roam the neighborhood. Be sure you have things in the house to keep the cats busy and entertained. Cat trees, toys, feeder balls, etc. will help keep Esther from getting bored. Cats like to hunt and inside cats can't hunt. Play that mimics hunting behaviors will help a great deal.
