outside pets

rescued several cats over the years and they typically live outdoors and stay close to home. I have had two different instances where two or more disappear at the same time, and are never seen again. Is it common for cats to leave and find new homes in pairs, or even three of them.....or should I suspect something else. All were neutered or spayed.

RESPONSE:

It is impossible to say what has happened without finding the cats. All cats are inclined to go exploring so it is not unusual to have more than one disappear at a time. They could have found another home, gotten lost and can't find their way back, been killed by a car or a dog (or other predators), etc. This is why we keep our cats protected in a fenced area. Only ferals are left to roam freely. Ferals usually know how to fend for themselves whereas strays do not and require human intervention to keep them safe. Hopefully, your cats that have disappeared will return but if not, all you can do is hope they are somewhere happy and safe!
