Once kind of compatible, now not !

by Mary
(Toronto, Canada)

I introduced a new little girl cat last June 2010 to my family of 4 male cats, two dogs. Everyone is spayed, neutered. The little girl Mia got along well with 3 of the male cats and the dogs, a bit of a strained relationship with one male although tolerable. This male cat, Eddy is unfortunately always the odd guy out and does have an obsessive grooming, chewing (himself) problem. Alot happened over the winter to our little family, both dogs passed away and one cat. Allof a sudden, this past April the dynamics changed, Mia/Eddy - with Eddy fixated on her and stalking her, she retaliates, which makes it worse, then the other two are in on it, more curious with hissing, growling and Mia thinks they are after her too. I've got her in a room on her own, feliway plug ins, sprays, bach flower remedies. Can anyone tell me why after a year this would happen?

RESPONSE:

You said it yourself, there have been a lot of changes in a very short time. The emotional dynamics of the household has changed. Play will help. Play helps burn off the excess energy caused by stress and will help build confidence. Play with them individually, especially Eddy, and also play with them together. When one cat starts going after another, pull out a toy and distract them from each other. Keep yourself calm and try to keep to a normal routine. Eventually, the cats will feel comforted by routine, have more fun playing with you, and will lessen their need to pick on each other. Try it and see how it goes.
