older cat fights new young cat
my three year old tom cat, recently fixed, jumps my new male kitten, about 2 months old, and holds him down. I am afraid to leave them together when I go to work. he doesn't bother the young female cat. what can I do?
RESPONSE:
This behavior is very common and has nothing to do with sexual desire. It is a dominence issue. And your 2 month old is too young to stand up to the bigger, older cat so keeping them seperate when you are not there to supervise is a good idea. Over time, and as the little one gets bigger, this behavior will stop. You don't say how old your young female is but if she is older than about 6-8 months, she is likely able to take care of herself and avoid being dominated in this manner by the male. Try giving them all treats when they are together and behaving and providing more interactive play with you to burn off excess energy. In the meantime, just be patient, this behavior will stop.
