newly spayed mom cat is beating up her two tweleve kittens help!!!

by brittnay

Someone please help... I got my cat named ginger over a year ago n I tried to get a another kitten from a dif litter n my ginger was hissing n freaking out.. so I gave her back.. well I didn't get ginger spayed in time n she got pregnant I adopted out all but two of her babies.. I wanted to keep these two with ginger.. I got her spayed one week ago n everything was great till last night.. I woke up to ginger freaking out.. she was hissing n chasing them n biting n batting them wit her claws.. there was no blood tho.. she was fine with them up until last night I had to seperate them.. does anyone have any idea wut is going on? She actually was looking for them when they were hiding in fear to fight them again... Does this have to do with her getting spayed? Does she not no who her kittens r anymore?, and oh yeah the kittens are almost tweleve weeks someone please help!!

RESPONSE:

This behavior is quite normal. Mom has been thru a trauma (spaying) and her hormone levels are dropping which affects her behavior. She does not want to be "mom" to the kittens anymore so when they come around and try to play with her she gets upset. It is unlikely she will actually hurt them and there is probably more noise than actual violence going on so let them work it out. Mom will calm down in a few weeks and in the meantime, the kittens will learn to keep out of her way.
