I'm new to this blog I been looking all over the internet for someone who knows what its like to care for lots of cats so this is right up my alie I am 22 years old and live at home with my mom we have 20 cats know we have always had way more then the normal 2 or 3 cats house so I grew up with lots of cats my Grandma started takeing in stray cats that were dumped off by her house and they had babys and so on know this past fall some of our girl cats had babys and I'm so happy to have them but the kittens don't seem to wanna use the litter boxes there pooping and peeing in all different parts of the house we tryed changing the litter and cleaning the boxes more we even tryed putting out more boxes in the places they seem to like going but even if a box is right by them they still chose to go on the floor we had them checked by our vet and she said they might just be late bloomers in learning that the boxes are wear there sapost to go but know in the last few days the older cats are starting to copy the babys and go anywere they want I love them all but I dont know how much more to take I spend all day and nite cleaning cat waste they go in the oddest places to like on my bed or in the bathtub on the floor right in the front doorway they also go behind the recliner or under the kitchen table and a couple of the older ones have been peeing on top of the stove I am out of ideals of why there doing this or how to stop it anyone got any ideals of how to stop them "Help".
RESPONSE:There are likely several reasons why this is happening. First, if you haven't already, you should read our section on litter boxes. (http://www.a-house-full-of-cats.com/catlitterbox.html) In large cat households, the usual litter boxes won't do. They are too small. Also, read our section on managing the cat pee problem. (http://www.a-house-full-of-cats.com/catpee.html) Both of these sections will give you some ideas to help you deal with the issues. Also, you need to clean the areas completely using a biological cleaner in order to get all of the smell out. Even if you can't smeall it, the cats still can so they keep going there.
You also need to make sure everyone is healthy. Have the stools checked for worms (a common problem) and get them checked by a vet to be sure they are healthy.
Since you don't say if they have access to the outdoors, it could be that there are just too many in the confined space of the house. It could be that the kittens never learned to use litter boxes or that some of the cats are upset and this is their way of telling you. With large numbers of cats, it is easy for them to have issues with each other. They should all be spayed/neutered as well or you will never get the problem under control.
Since the problem has been going on for a while, it will take a lot of effort to improve things and with 20 cats, it is unlikely you will be able to stop it completely. At this point, isolation may be your only option. Read the sections I mentioned, try the suggestions, get creative, give it time and see how it goes.
Good Luck!
