New Cat?

by Sam
(Boise, ID)

My roommates got two new cats that were only 8 weeks old about two months ago. Three days ago one of the roommates moved and took one of the cats. The cat that is still here is now meowing and crying most of the day - I know he is looking for his friend - with both cats being so young should we get a new young cat?

RESPONSE:

If you decide to get another kitten, it should be because YOU want a kitten, not because you think your cat needs a friend. As with any new addition, you current cat may or may not get along with his new friend. There will be some initial hissing and fussing then they will either become friends or decide not to be friends. If they decide not to be friends, you will then have 2 kittens that prefer to be alone and need your attention more than ever. It is because of this, getting a new kitten should be because You want a kitten. However, that being said, we have never had just one kitten at a time. Sometimes the "stranger" kittens become friends and other times they don't but regardless of the outcome, they all get the love and attention each deserves. Good Luck!
