Neighborhood feral cat visitor

by Sue

We have a pretty 2 year old female (spayed) cat, Kiki. She is an only cat and very independent. There is a small very bold feral male cat, I call him Napoleon, who comes around and invades her space. He will be about 1-2 feet away and she is backed up against the porch. They just sit there but if I open the door she will run in, most of the time.

He then comes up to the door, it's glass and tries to see where she has gone. He has a very cute face and it is really hard to chase him away.

Sometimes they touch noses and I think they are friends, but then she flattens her ears and as if crinkles her nose and turns around, tail low and seems to be not liking him.

My questions: Are they friends or is he trying to take over her space? should I chase him away or let them work it out? she seems bothered by his presence but curious at the same time. I sometimes interfere and other times leave them alone. I'd like to know what's going on.

Thanks for any insight and advise you can offer.

P.S. Napoleon does not belong to anyone but I understand there are several people who feed him and take him in around the neighborhood.

RESPONSE:

It sounds like Napoleon is just trying to make friends and Kiki is just making sure he knows that your home is HER territory. As long as they are not fighting, I wouldn't be concerned. Just be sure Kiki is up on all her vaccinations and, if you really want to be nice to Napoleon, take him to the vet and get him neutered and vaccinated!
Otherwise, just keep letting her in if she wants and don't worry about them. Let them work things out on their own. And prepare yourself that you just might end up with another cat!
