my cats have ganged up one one female

by Stormey
(Baltimore, Md )

I have 9 cats some are related to each other. Recently 2 of my female cats have terrorized one female cat. They have all been neutered. Even her brothrs (2) have started hissing at her and chasing her. So now it is 4 against one very nice sweet cat.The other 4 males do not bother her. I have tried removing her from the area, used a water bottle to stop the fighting. I am afraid the poor cat will become a nervous wreck. HELP!!

RESPONSE:

The most likely cause for this is that the cats are bored and the sweet, timid cat has allowed the others to intimidate her. Deterrents will not change this behavior. You need to redirect everyone's energies toward more positive behaviors. I know we have said this a million times but we can't stress it enough - PLAY,PLAY,PLAY!!! Play will help the other's burn off the excess stress and energies that makes them want to attack their sister and play will help the target cat build her confidence making her less of a target. Keep toys stashed around the house, carry treats, and when you see the others stalking or otherwise looking like they are going on the attack, bring out a toy or treat and distract them from their pursuit. You can also try using flower essences to help everyone cope better but they are not effective without using behavior modifications (like play therapy & distraction) along with them. (Check the links on the left to read more about Bach Flowers and Spirit Essences for cats) Whatever you do, be sure to give it plenty of time to see any improvement before you decide it is not working. Nothing will change behavior overnight so patience and consistancy are the key to success. Good Luck!
