My cat is so fussy with his food

by Cat lover
(Wales)

Hi.
My beautiful 2 year old neutered male cat is very very fussy with his food. I have tried almost everything on the market and he will only eat one type. This is a dried complete food, which is fine, but he does not eat very much. He is an indoor cat so I know he won't need as much food as an outdoor cat but I still think he should be eating more, the daily allowance guide stated on the food will last him almost 3 days. He will occasionally try wet food but more often than not he will just lick the gravy off it and leave the meat, however, if he does eat the meat its only a matter of minutes before he throws it all back up. I don't think he is underweight, his energy levels are high and he is a very happy playful cat and he has had a clean bill of health from the vets but I'm still concerned than he doesn't eat much...am I just an anxious mother??

RESPONSE:

Dear Cat Lover:

Since you say your cat is healthy, active, playful, and not under-weight, you are probably just being overly anxious.
The feeding guidelines on most commercial cat foods are way too much for most cats. After all, they want you to buy a lot of their food. So don't even read the guidelines anymore!
Regarding him vomiting up the meat of canned foods, they are likely just too rich for his system. Since he is tolerating and likes his current food there is no reason to change.
If you want, you can add food toppers made for cats or even "people" gravy as a treat sometimes. Try giving him freeze-dried treats occasionally as well. If he doesn't like them or won't eat them, don't worry yourself about it!
As long as he stays healthy and happy, you have nothing to worry about! Just enjoy him as he is!
