My Cat doesn't like my "cooking"

by Denise
(Loudonville, NY)

Hi,
I love your website. We are a one cat family (sorry, it's really all I can handle, but we did adopt from the local humane society). When we adopted our cat he came with "science" diet. Prior to this I had a dog (sadly we had to euthanize him in January) that I fed a raw diet for the 10 years that I had him. I have been able to transition "Bubba" to the "chicken soup for the cat lover's soul" dry food that you sell and recommend, but he doesn't like the home-made raw recipe. I feel very disheartened because my dog always loved whatever I "cooked". Perhaps, I'm not doing this right. Any advice? I have some other questions, but one thing at a time. Hopefully I'll be organized enough by then to include a photo:-}

RESPONSE:

Thank you for adopting a cat in need! Not all cats really like the raw meat, especially if they have been used to only dry food.
Start by mixing a little canned food with the dry. Once he is happy with that, start cutting back on the dry and increasing the canned food.
Once he is happy with just the canned food, start mixing some raw chicken with it, then mix some of the raw meat food, and slowly transition off the canned to only the raw meat.
But don't feel bad if he(?) won't eat the raw meat. If he is happy eating canned only or canned with dry "on the side", let him have it. The important thing is that cats eat healthy, quality food. Feeding him something he won't eat will not make him healthy so be happy he is healthy and eating!
