MOVING A CAT TO A DIFFERENT HOUSE

I AM MOVING ABOUT 1/2 MILE FROM WHERE I HAE LIVED SINCE2003. MY CAT IS INDOOR AND OUTDOOR CAT. HOW LONG SHOULD I KEEP MY CAT INSIDE THE HOUSE BEFORE THE SCENT HAS LEFT THE OTHER HOUSE AND LAND. WHEN COULD I BE SAFE IN LETTING HIM OUTSIDE AND KNOW THAT HE COULD NOT PICK UP HIS SCENT AT THE OTHER HOME?

RESPONSE:

The recommendation is at least 2 weeks in the new home then short supervised visits outside for another 2 weeks. However, since you are moving such a short ways away from your old home, your cat is likely already familiar with the area and will remember where the old house is because he has explored the area already.
I suggest you alert the people moving into your old house and give them you number so they can contact you if he shows up.
Better yet, just make him an indoor cat now!
