Mad cat

by Jo-Anne Clevenger
(Taylor, Mi.)

I only have two male cats. the one gets made once in a while. He gut growls and turns on us. my spouse wants to get ride of him I don't but it is scarry. I try to explain to my spouse to leave the room and let him calm down. I think the scarry movie he was watching did it. Sometimes its a cat outside. my spouse threw a blanket over him but he came out fast. Really he loves to be around people sleeps with us. right now after scarring my spouse and the other cat, he's under my desk by my feet.
I just don't know what to do.

RESPONSE:

What is happening when the cat "turns on you"? Are you petting him? Does he just attack you for no apparent reason? Why did your spouse throw a blanket over him?
Cats usually become aggressive when they are scared. He lacks confidence and becomes agressive to help him cope. Sometimes, cats have a sensitivity along their backs and petting is very uncomfortable and causes them to become sgressive in order to stop the petting. If this is the case with your cat, stop petting him along the back. Under the chin or behind the ears is better.
In the meantime, keep treats and toys handy so he learns to associate good things with you, the house, the other cat, etc. You may want to try Bach Flower Essences or Spirit Essences to help him feel more secure. If the problem is very severe, St. John's Wort for a couple of days may help.
Don't punnish him, yell at him or become agressive back. This will only increase his anxiety and make the problem worse. Play with him more frequently to allow him to get rid of the pent up energy that his anxiety is causing. A tired cat is a happy cat!
Try these things and see if his behavior improves and he calms down. Above all else, you need to remain calm. Cats are very sensitive creatures and pick up on your emotions. If you are anxious or angry, he will become more anxious and agressive.

Good Luck,
Donna,
