litter box

by Diane
(Greendale)

I use a big box like you have for my cat. How do you keep it clean? I scoop but the box itself smells. To dump that much litter out every two weeks would cost a fortune. Any ideas?

RESPONSE:

We use antibacterial dishwashing liquid mixed with water in a spray bottle and spray and wipe down the inside of the boxes when we scoop. This helps keep them clean. Just be careful not to get the sand itself wet.
About once a year or if the boxes are really damaged with lots scratches, we replace the box. Scratches in the plastic can harbor bacteria which creates odors. Replacing the sand won't help if the odors are actually in the box and your right, the cost would be outrageous! I know it is recommended to replace the entire sand every 2 weeks but, to be honest, we never replace it. We just keep it clean! Hope this helps!
