Kitten jumping on old cats

by Lynne
(Australia)

Hi, I have two 18 year old cats (females). After my third cat passed away I decided to adopt from a rescue service. I have had the new kitten (male) for about 1/2 months now. Recently he has started jumping on, running up and swatting or stalking the older two. One of which is so stressed now she has been having bowel issues. I realise he is just looking to play and i have provided many toys and bits of cat furniture etc, plus making time to play with him each day. But how do I stop him from constantly bothering the other two? As i feel if I don't one of the others will get very sick. I have been told to get another young one and would like to do so but I don't want to make the issue on the older ones worse.

RESPONSE:

I too recommend having 2 kittens at the same time just for this very reason. You can't stop him from doing what comes naturally - this is how he learns. If getting another kitten is not possible, give the older cats a kitten free zone, a bedroom perhaps, that the kitten isn't allowed to go into, and shut the door. Be sure there is food, water, litter, and especially, warm comfy places to sleep. The older cats will not feel isolated or like they are being punnished. They will be greatful! They need a quiet, kitten free space to relax and at 18, they have earned it!
