kitten and cat wars

by beth
(warwick,ny)

I have a three year old tabby who does not like people. Since I travel alot and he gets lonely I just got a ten week old tabby kitten The two of them for the first week and a half were fine. They played and even ate from the same bowl. Now the older one hisses at the kitten and does not play at all with him. They are both males. The kitten is a little high strong but he is calming down. What can I do to get them back together?

RESPONSE:

Nothing. Just let them work things out on their own as long as the older cat is not hurting the kitten. Hissing is just a cat's way of setting limits to another cat. Kittens have boundless energy so lots of playtime will help both cats burn off excess energy. A 3 year old is a complete, adult cat and the kitten is like a 2 year old. All of us can get irritated with a 2 year old when forced to be with them 24/7. Just give it time.
