Incessant litterbox pawing

Hi,

We recently relocated with our two 10 month old male neutered cats from Calgary, Canada to Costa Rica. I thought they handled the flight quite well, however the same cannot be said for their litter box. So we have purchased a new one. Now one of the cats paws incessantly in it, so much so that it woke me lastnight.

We have only been here for a little over a week now, but the cats are beginning to adjust to their new surroundings.

Please help.

Thank you,

RESPONSE:

Is it the same litter? Same type of box? Often, especially given the move, using a different type of litter or box can cause this behavior. Also, if the sand isn't deep enough, a cat will keep pawing at the box in an attempt to dig deeper. Try putting more sand in (about 4 inches) and see if the cat likes it better.
Also, he may just be doing it because he enjoys it. If so, he will tire of it eventually. In the meantime, try putting the box where you can't hear him at night.
