I have 6 cats

by Amanda
(Tennessee)

I rescue animals and I have six cats 3 are rescues. The younger cats are chasing my older cats and it has become alot of hissing and fighting. What can I do I love them all and do not want to rehome any of them. But I don't want my older cats chased all the time.

Thanks,

Mandi

RESPONSE:

This type of behavior is not unusual. Increasing play time, especially for the younger ones, will help. Be sure there are lots of high up places and cubbies so the cats can get away from each other when they need to. You can also try using Bach Flower Essences or Spirit Essences to help calm everyone's heightened emotions. Above all, you need to stay calm when they start going after each other. If you get upset, the cats will pick up on your emotions and it will make them more anxious and more inclined to pick on each other. When you notice a cat starting to go after another cat, pull out a string toy or fishing pole type toy, toss a ball, etc. to distract them from each other. We have toys stashed all over the house just for this purpose. Try it, it works!
