Higharchy in multiple cat household

by Deb
(MA)

I have 3 cats. Daisy and Max are brother and sister from the same litter. They are 4 years old and I have had them since they were born. The third cat is Jet and I got him as a 5 week kitten when Max and Daisy were 1 years old. So I have one female and two males. My problem is that the two males play has been very rough for the past year. I am trying to find out if this is because Jett is trying to take over Max's position. Neither male does this behavor with the female. So my question is IS there higherachy in cats and will this continue.

RESPONSE:

Cats do have dominent and submissive roles and there is usually a "top cat" but I suspect it is your girl that is the Queen of the group. After all, neither of the boys push her around!
Cats don't have a clear hierachy dogs do and their positions in the group can change. Often, who is on top is quite subtle and it is not always a male.
As for the rough play, the boys are both now fully mature and young and energetic. They are burning off excess energy. As long as there is no blood being drawn, I wouldn't worry about it. If it does bother you however, or there is physical damage being done, you can help curb this behavior by playing with them more often and providing solitary play toys for them when you are not around. Click the Cat Play link on the left for some good play ideas.
Otherwise, just let them have their fun!
