Help! Will they ever get along?

I have an eleven year old female cat that has been with me since she was a kitten. Six months ago, a stray came to our door and we adopted her when we couldn't find her a home. The stray cat (around 1 year old) loves to play - often times with play swatting and sometimes chasing - and the elder cat hisses constantly. I heard that it may take time for the cats to get along... but after six months I was hoping that they would be friends by now. Any tips?

RESPONSE:

Your older cat does not have the energy to play with the younger cat. You need to play with her and give her things to occupy her so she will be less inclined to try to play with the older cat. It is doubtful the two will ever become friends simply because of the age difference. Be sure to spend quality time with the older cat too so she will not feel like you have replaced her with the younger one. And just ignore the hissing. It is how your older cat it telling the younger one to leave her alone!
