Help, whats my kitty trying to tell me with recent spraying?
Our ginger tom has always been a bit of a anxious stress kitty; he is a 2 year old CH cat, he sleeps a lot less than our other two cats, and finds it hard to relax without being easily startled or distracted. He has always been very good at using the litter tray but lately he has started spraying indoors. We have a feliaway plugged in, cat nip is regularly used in bouts, lots of cuddles & attention and toys. We are multi cat household (all kittys CH), two toms (1 a year older) and female (same age) there is no dominance issue from the other male, he is too easy going but there is friction between ginger tom and our fiesty female. They do play together but some of the time there is hissing and growling; after reading on a few sites Im realising the female blocks the toms from coming near me at times so there is perhaps more of a dominance issue than first realised and perhaps its this I need to address first? though they have always got on like this - could this be the reason for the sudden and recent spraying? And any ideas on ways to help my furry buddy relax a little more?
RESPONSE: I am assuming all of your cats are desexed otherwise my suggestions will be meaningless. It sounds like your female is developing some jealousy about you. Holly Bach Flower Essence may help. Put a few drops in their water (it won't affect non-jealous cats) and rub a few drops around her head and ears 2 or 3 times a day. Make a spray bottle of the Holly essence and water to spray on yourself, especially your legs. This may help her to calm down. Don't give any essence undiluted directly by mouth or in the food as it tastes terrible and can make some cats sick. Increase play time and give them treats when they are in the same room and behaving. This will help them to associate good things with each other. You need to completely clean and remove the odor from any area where he has sprayed. Use a cleaner specially made to remove cat urine odor. We use products from Planet Urine which we find works exceptionally well. If you haven't already, check out our section on dealing with Cat Pee issues for more ideas that may help. Spraying is a tough habit to break but with time, patience and consistancy, it can be done.
