Gender match for multi-cat household?

by Linda Ziesmer
(Michigan)

We currently have 3 adult females; 1 10 yrs and 2 4yrs. We want to add another, but given that females are more territorial, wonder if we would be better adding a male to the mix. Your thoughts?

RESPONSE:

We have found that is doesn't really matter. If your girls are prone to being jealous and territorial, they will be that way no matter whether you bring in a male or another female. We do find that they tolerate kittens better than a mature cat. As long as all of them are spayed (or neutered) and you introduce them all properly they should all get along eventually, or at least tolerate one another!
Good Luck and Have Fun!
