Former well trained cat now leaving stools & peeing on bed.

Hi- I read the whole pg. on Cat Pee! Managing the problem. The cat in question( male) was very dependable about using the litter box. Now he's defecating in the front room, has peed on the bed twice.
We went from 4 cats to 6. Two kittens needed to be rescued.
We are also cat sitting 2 more for 3 weeks.
There are two litter boxes in the master bath. He has recently been to the vet and nearly $400 later, he's fit as can be.
My sheets are in the wash and the comforter he likes is next.
My husband won't put up w/ this and I don't want to lose the cat. Cat pee & excrement are reasons to re-home a cat in his book.
I will re-read the pg on Cat Pee, but I think I'm doing everything mentioned there.
Thanks in advance, Mary
RESPONSE:
Your boy is upset about the new cats in the house and is likely marking his territory - especially you! He wants to be sure that the new cats know that you belong to him. Also, he probably doesn't want to share toilet facilities with them. Hopefully, you have more than the 2 litter boxes you mention. Be sure you have enough litter boxes for all of the cats. Completely clean every area where he has gone using a cleaner designed to remove cat urine. Just washing like normal won't do the job. Be sure he is getting plenty of play time and give him treats when he is near the other cats so he learns to associate good things with them. Try putting books, plastic, or a waterproof mattress cover on the bed to discourage him (or at least make cleaning easier!) Some cats respond well to Feli-way so try using a diffuser and or spray - especially in your bedroom and the master bath. Try to note times when he is eliminating inappropriately - especially on the bed. Are the litter boxes clean? Is there a new cat near him or did on just leave the room? This will help you to discover his "triggers" so you can prevent them or try to discract him. Try using Bach Flowers to help him cope with the new cats since he is having trouble coping with them in his house. (Check the link on the left) Inappropriate elimination is a difficult habit to break. Hopefully things will improve when the 2 you are cat sitting return home. Remember, never yell or get mad at him for going where he shouldn't - it will only make the problem worse.
