flea problem with 11 cats and a dog

by Jacque
(Ohio)

Hi, I am new here. What a great site!

I have 11 inside cats...all strays (started with two pregnant gals and they have not been outside in two years)...and 7 outside (all new strays and they will remain OUTSIDE! I recently moved and something about me just screams "Cat Lady"! :) ) All indoor and several of the outdoor have been spayed and neutered. (as finances will allow...)

My problem is I can't seem to get rid of the fleas! Frontline works about two weeks and boom! I have treated the house also, several times trying to get anything that might be hatching. THEN...it's treating the tapeworm. I am on a fixed income and can't afford to keep this up, but I also can't afford not too! This is the first time I have had this problem!

I need advice fast!

Many thanks,
Jacque

RESPONSE:

Jacque:

We are surprised to hear you have fleas this time of year - you'd just think it was too cold! But then, fleas are crafty little devils!
It sounds like you have an infestation and will likely need to treat the house a couple of times. Most any type of flea treatment will work. We use a carpet powder that is all natural. Some use diatamacious earth which is also effective.
For the cats, we prefer Revolution to Frontline. You can get it pretty cheap and without a perscription through a website called Joe's Pet Meds. It last quite a while on our cats but then our flea issue is a small one.
You may need to just get really aggressive and box up all the cats, remove them from the premises for part of a day and set off foggers in the house and spray the yard. Once you get rid of the major infestation, simple, safer, and ultimately cheaper treatments should work just fine to keep the fleas at bay!
