Feral introduction

by T Mo
(Los Angeles, ca)

How do you introduce 3 baby ferals to my very trained boys? My trained boys are attacking each other now. The ferals are in a different room and are starting to get used to us. Our boys just turned six. I'm very sad about the situation, but the complex where my office is was going to trap the cats and have them killed. No one else would take them. My 3 boys are miserable.

RESPONSE:

Your boys are acting out because they know there are strangers in the house. You don't say how old the baby cats are but since they are just getting used to you, they should remain in isolation until they are comfortable with you and their new surroundings. Play with your boys often to let them burn off the excess energy caused by the anxiety of the new kittens. Once the new kittens are used to you, you can start introducing them to your boys. If possible, put a screen door on the room the kittens are in so that all of the cats can see and smell each other. Knowing there are cats behind closed doors that they can't get to increases their anxiety. Give it lots of time and give them all lots of attention and just move slowly.
