Dominance or Jealousy?

by Jess
(Brea)

I have two female cats close in age, less than a year apart, the are 6 and 7. One of my cats continuosly steals the other ones spots. Is is jealousy, or dominance?

RESPONSE:

Depends on HOW the stealing is done. If she is pushing the other cat out of the way or intimidating her until she feels uncomfortable and leaves, then it is more likely a dominence issue. If she is getting very agressive with the other cat and acting needy around you, there may be a jealousy componant as well.
If she simply moves in when the other leaves, she just likes the warmth and scent of that spot and wants to enjoy it.
It could also be that the likes her buddy and wants to be close but "her buddy" doesn't want to snuggle so she leaves. (They tend to snuggle more with the cooler weather.)
Our cats are constantly switching choice places to sleep. It has nothing to do with dominence or jealousy - they just like their comforts!
