Litter disposal
by: Amy

I love your website, thank you so much for sharing!
We live in a small town in Kentucky where cats are "just cats", except at our house! As of today
we have 9, all strays and all perfect. Conway and Loretta are the only ones not neutered/spayed at this time. (Don't worry though, it will happen as soon as they're old enough!) MeatLoaf, Patti and Axl are the grown kittens of Elizabeth who popped out a screen in my bedroom window and promptly had her kittens in my closet! We'd never met before I came home and found her and her children nestled in my laundry. In the 18 months since then, we've become very close. The other three, Medium, Tiny, and Abner are between 2 and 4 years old. We also have 2 Chihuahuas, 1 English Setter, and 1 mix (stray). Stanley, the Chihuahua rules the roost with an iron paw and everyone gets along pretty well, most of the time. Patti is a tad hateful with the other cats at times, but I think that's just her personality.
Sorry to go on so...back to the litter. We use Fresh Step and have found it's about the only one that really works for us. I know it's not "green" but when we scoop, we put the clumps in the empty litter boxes and then in our garbage to be picked up by the garbage truck. We also always get plastic bags at Wal Mart and the grocery and use those for disposal as well. Again, I know it's not green, but when you deal with that much poop you do what you have to!
Thanks again for a wonderful website and information!

RESPONSE:

Thank you for opening your heart and home to rescue cats in need. Regarding the litter, we do what you do. I have seen print ads for biodegradable litters but have not yet seen them available here in the states. I imagine they will be too costly for a large mulitple cat household but at least there is hope! Keep up the good work and thank you for your positive comments!
