cleaning cat boxes

There are a lot of wonderful links on this website but I haven't found anything on how often you recommend cleaning litter boxes out completely and refilling with fresh litter in multiple cat households. I have 5 kitties and want to make sure I am doing everything right to keep them all happy. Thanks, Katlin

RESPONSE:

Well, the experts recommend completely cleaning out the boxes and replacing the sand every two weeks. But, since we use big storage bins fashoned into litter boxes, and they require 30-40 pounds of sand to fill, we don't follow the experts advice for obvious reasons. The boxes are cleaned to the level of sand every time we scoop, topped off with fresh sand, and replaced once a year. Hope this helps!

Litter Box Cleaning
by: Brenda

I don't follow the experts either. I have a large litter box (that's right, just one) that three cats use. I scoop twice a day or three if needed to make sure there is never a pile of litter in the box so that there are no smells. I make sure fresh litter is poured on top to keep the level high. I do a complete litter change about once every two months. This has been my method for over 20 years. Normally I have two cats, but it's working fine with three.
