Cat Safety - Keeping Cats Safe Indoors and Outdoors

Cat Safety is a concern for every cat owner. In a multiple cat household, safety can be a bit of a challenge - especially if there are active kittens living side by side with senior cats that may have decreasing vision, hearing or arthritis.

We all know that cats are curious creatures. They have a need to check out everything and often want to 'help' you do your daily activities.

They can squeeze into seemingly impossible places and jump to heights you need a ladder to get to.

They like to scoot things around and watch them fall from that high place you didn't realize they could get to. And if it shatters into a thousand pieces when it falls, they will play with the pieces too!

Plastics, rubber bands, your favorite sweater, nothing is safe from a curious kitty!

In a multiple cat household, you have to be extra careful where you step when you walk, look before you sit down in a chair or set down a heavy bag or box, and be careful what you leave sitting out on the kitchen sink.

Cat Safety also concerns itself with the indoor cat or outdoor cat controversy. Does keeping a cat indoors go against their very nature? Should cats be allowed to roam outside freely? And, if you keep your cats indoors, will they truly be safe?

There is no clear cut answer. There are cat safety risks both indoors and outdoors. We want our cats to have plenty of fresh air and sunshine but is it right to allow them to roam the neighborhood freely?

A cat that goes outdoors takes with him the same level of curiosity that he has indoors. He will examine every bug, explore every inch of your neighbors yard, or even crawl up inside a warm car for a nap or have a snack out of an open rubbish bin.

An outdoor cat also faces risks from speeding cars, roaming dogs, and even mean people and other cats!

Your cats depend on you to help keep them safe, to protect them from themselves and the big, bad world they live in - indoors or out! With a little education, preparation, and awareness, you will find that a little cat safety will go a long way toward all of your cats living long, happy, and safe lives.
