"cats gone wild"

by Anne
(Canton, Ga)

My mom just passed away and I have inherited her female cat, I have 4 boys of my own who are usually very loving toward each other, I have put the new girl in a bedroom, but my boys have this kind of transfered agression going on and there is lots of growling and fighting--what do I do?

RESPONSE:

This is very typical behavior for cats. Add more play time, keep to your usual routine, and act like nothing has changed. They are likely picking up on your feelings of grief as well. Spend time with the boys and let them share in your grieving. Ignore their outburts and things will likely get better. Just give it time.
