cat trouble
by: Jennifer

my cat is 10 years old, recently he has started yelping a deep thoated yowl. He has started trying to run out the door when we enter or exit. He has been sick with urinary problems his whole life. Anyway from 1 to 9 no problems. The vet said he was just old and nothing can be done. If this is just old age what can I do to keep him comfortable. Lately he just wants me to hold him all day, which I can't do.

Running out the door aversion conditioning
by: Stan

Our first cat was a run out the open door cat. I began to offer the open door to her whenever we had inclement weather. She would go out where there was a little shelter, the small covered porch and close to the house (under the overhang) in the backyard. Depending on the intensity of the rain, she returned pretty quickly. I did find it necessary to chase and retrieve her once when I felt she was too comfortable moving away under the overhang. I found it necessary to do this conditioning with both exit doors. Eventually, she didn't care to check what was beyond the door. Unfortunately, many people in multi-family housing complexes can't use this method. Hope this helps.

Distracting with treats or toys may also help make a cat not want to run out!
