cat litter box

by anne fowler
(tacome,wa.)

i have a male cat for 13 year and wanted to bring in a wild kitten into the house but will not use the new cat litter box.

RESPONSE:

Anne:

I'm not exactly sure of your question but will assume that you mean the new kitten will not use the litter box. If this is not the case, please email us with more info.
Kittens learn to use litter boxes from their mothers. If raised outdoors, they simply don't know what a litter box is for and go wherever they feel comfortable.
To get them to use the litter box, you need to confine the kitten to a small room such as a bathroom. Take up any rugs on the floor.
Put food, water, toys, etc in there along with a litter box. Use Cat Attract litter or Litter Attractant along with your usual litter to help entice the kitten to the box. Scratch around in the litter and make sure the kitten sees you scratching around in it.
Usually, since there is nothing else to scratch in, the kitten will want to use the litter box for his business. It is instinctive for him to want to scratch and cover his business so as long as there is nothing else he can do this with he will go for the litter.
Keep him confined until he is faithfully using the litter box every time. Once you let him out, make sure not to move the box for a while so he will remember where it is.
Try this and see how it goes.
