Cat diet and diarrhea

by Kathy Anderson
(Spanaway, WA, USA)

I have a large, 21#, cat that I rescued as a kitten. When very young he had diarrhea and I was told to give him cottage cheese which seemed to take care of the problem but it's back and he won't eat cottage cheese now.

The doctor said there are no parasites and no infections but to give him cat yogurt or acidophillus, which I can't find. She gave me a few samples and it doesn't seem to help anyway. I tried people yogurt and that made things worse.

I want to try chicken cat food to see if it's the wheat. do you have any suggestions? His bottom becomes a mess, he doesn't have good hygiene, so we find spots all over the place where he has sat.

Any help is great appreciated. The vet seems to not know wht to do.

thanks

RESPONSE:

FortiFlora helps to balance the intestinal flora in cats with diarrhea. You can get it from your vet. It is highly likely his problem is a food allergy so giving him grain free food should help. We have several cats that do not do well on commercial cat foods which is shy we advocate raw meat food. The recipe is on our website. Try him on a batch of it and see if it makes any difference.
Another reader has had great success with adding a dab of coconut oil to her cat's food. We have not tried this but it is worth a try.
