cat chaser

by Linda
(Enfield)

I recently moved into a condo with my sister. She has a fixed female cat and I have a fixed male cat. My male will chase her cat back into her room every chance he gets and then the female will hiss and growl at him. We have tried squirting water at my cat is that the right thing to do?

RESPONSE:

You are basically punnishing your cat for doing what comes naturally. It will not help. It will only increase his anxiety. Both cats have had their lives disrupted and cats do not deal well with change. They need to be reassured that their life is normal and good. Establish a routine for each of them regarding feeding, bed time, etc. Feed them away from each other so they don't feel any competition for food. Play with them frequently and provide treats afterward. Make sure they have their own safe space either up high or cubbies, which ever they prefer. They should have seperate water, beds, and litter boxes as well. Give them time and be patient. They are 2 strangers that have been forced to live together and both are scared. Establishing a routine and giving them their private space will help them to adjust.
