Agressive Cat Attacking Owner for No Reason

one minute the cat is fine the next she is atacking her owner. It does not matter when or where this happens. the owner can just be walking around or just sitting with the cat in her lap. It is getting to where this cat could lose her home or even not be able to find another one. We are afraid she will hurt someone. The owner has been bitten hard enough to were she has had to have it looked at and even had to take meds for the bite. She is about 2yrs old now. Came into the household about 8 weeks of age. she has had stomach issues and on a limited diet for awhile and at one time was on predesone to keep her from throwing up. Once the cat attacks she shys back to the owner and wants to be picked up as if she has done nothing wrong. She also seems to see things up on the ceiling that are not there. She is getting very jumpy at all most any thing now. she was not like this when first brought into home. she is an only cat. I am thinking she has a head issue and nothing is going to help her. Which means she could end up being destroyed. The owner is about 80 years of age and has many cats in here life and has never had a problem like this before and all of her cats were indoor cats like this one.

RESPONSE:

I am so sorry to hear about this! It sounds like a medical problem and I recommend having her checked by her vet. Unless there is something going on that no one is aware of yet that would cause this type of agressive behavior, a medical issue is the most likely cause.
We have used St John's Wort to calm overly anxious, fearful and agressive cats but only after all medical problems were ruled out or corrected.
Take her to the vet and explain in as much detail as possible what the cat is doing. She could be experiencing something that causes her pain and/or anxiety which makes her lash out at odd moments. Get her checked ASAP.
Once she is cleared medically, the vet can then recommend medications to help calm her and then you can start to work on her behavior.
Good luck and let us know what happens.
