Aggressive Cat

by Cheri
(Madison, Wi)

I have two cats Madison is 4 and Keegan is 1 1/2. Keegan is a sweetheart with me however he has become aggressive jumping on Madison, chasing her, and not letting up. This is very different then how they have played before.

Keegan is stalking her when he is in this mode he doesn't hear anything. I finally gave in and tried the squirt bottle when he is in this mode at this point he is so focused he doesn't react. His ears are flattened, he changes his posture often going low to the ground. He is clearly out for the "kill."

Madison is a smaller cat at 7lbs. Keegan is 9lbs. When he jumps on her he does not give up. If she jumps away he tackles her again. If she runs he chases.

Until this behavior I had a firm policy that cat politics are cat politics and I stay out of it. They both used to seem to enjoy playing each other. This is very different.

I have tried things like Rescue Remedy, clapping loudly, hissing, picking him up and putting him in another room, ignoring him after he attacks her.

I am aware by getting my reaction he is getting rewarded with attention so I have increased his special play with Mommy time. Even after I will devote 25 min of constant play time were he will be laying on the floor exhausted. If he hears Madison he is up and running after her.

I am at my wits end. I have never had a cat act like this. Madison has started throwing up. Not food just liquid. I am worried the stress is getting to her.

Both cats were adopted at the humane society. Madison is spayed and Keegan is neutered. I took both of them to the vet for a check she reported them to be in excellent health.

Any ideas would be very helpful! Thank You

RESPONSE:

Keegan is just coming into his own as an adult. This change in behavior is not ususual. Be sure there are lots of high up places and cubbies for Madison to get away from Keegan when she wants to. Play with both of them. Play will tire Keegan and help build Madison's confidence. Keep string/fishing pole toys handy so when you see Keegan start to stalk Madison, distract him with the toy. Offer them both treats after play. Even though it is difficult, try not to discipline Keegan after he attacks as, you are right, he considers this a type of reward so it makes him want to do it more. Try these suggestions and just be patient. Keegan will grow out of his desire to attack Madision as he ages and especially if he does not get any reward out of it. Good Luck!
