Adult cat's depression

by Tamara
(Las Cruces, NM)

We have a two year old male cat. He is loveable and very affectionate with us. He was very friendly with the neighbors’ cats too. Several days ago we adopted a kitten. As we introduced the cats to each other they hissed at each other the first day. We tried to keep a little kitten separate from him. He seemed to be fine, but after a couple of days his behavior changed. He is really sad, he doesn't eat as much as usual and he hides under the bed more often. He doesn't want to be held. He doesn't even want to eat his favorite treats. I don't know what to do to make things better.
Thank you.
Tamara

RESPONSE:

Cats don't deal well with change and adding a new kitten is a big change for your older cat. He will get over it it time. In the mean time, be sure to try to keep to his normal routine and especially play with him - without the kitten. Isolate the kitten or, if he is more comfortable in the room he is in, shut the door and play with him there. He will continue to growl and even slap at the kitten until he becomes more comfortable with her. This is normal and as long as he is not injuring the kitten, let them work things out on their own. If he won't come out from under the bed, try putting his food under there with him. Leave it for about 30 minutes and if he doesn't eat, take it away. Make sure the kitten can't get to him and his food during meal times. If he won't eat at all, try baby food (Gerber's chicken or ham 2nd foods works best) Most cats love baby food. It is likely he is just upset but keeping to his routine and letting him know that the kitten is not taking his place will help a lot. Good Luck!
