Adopting Stray Kitties

by Debra
(South Jersey)

Hi! I discovered your website about two months ago and have really gotten great tips from it, especially about cat nutrition and homemade food. I've now got a question that is so basic that you will think I'm an idiot. Here goes...

We have two gorgeous domestic longhair torties (sisters). They were twelve years old in March and, at their annual wellness exam, were found to be in excellent health. My husband and I just found out that the other was getting the itch to "expand the family". And, as if the Almighty was listening, we discovered that a Momma Cat with three kittens had taken up residence under our shed! We've been putting food and fresh water out for them nearby. Momma Cat looks healthy--not too thin--but she is outdoors with no collar. The kittens look pretty healthy, too. I think they might be about two, two-and-a-half months. We'd like to adopt the youngsters but we're not sure how to lure them out from under the shed and away from Momma Cat. Right now, we don't have any traps or anything so we're kinda at a loss as to what to do. Can you help?

RESPONSE:

I think it is great that you want to try to rescue these kitties. But it can be difficult. Try moving the food and water closer and closer to your door. Drop treats in a trail toward your door so they can "forage" their way right in. Spend time talking with them so they get used to the sound of your voice. Try a string toy or fishing pole type toy to try and get the kittens close. There is no guarentee that these things will work so a trap may be your best bet. You can often rent them from your local animal shelter. Don't try catching the kittens by chasing them. That will just scare them away from you. Good Luck!
