About Us and the House Full Cat Sanctuary

Thank you for wanting to know about us and The House Full Cat Sanctuary. We live in and run a free-roaming cat sanctuary. Most of our cats are strays. Abandoned and left to fend for themselves, many would not have survived without human intervention.

They come to us as kittens too young to be on their own and as older kittens and adults, unable to survive alone because of illness, injury or because they were originally someone's pet and never learned how to survive in the wild.

We provide much needed love, care, socialization and companionship to the unloved, unwanted and unadoptable. All of the cats who come to our cat sanctuary are allowed to live out their lives in freedom and safety.

After an initial quarantine when they first arrive to await medical clearance, our cats are not caged or separated from the group. They have free run of the house and grounds so we have cats everywhere and into everything!

We have always loved cats but it wasn't until we moved to a rural town in California that we decided to open our home completely to cats in need. We arrived here with our 4 cats and 2 dogs in the middle of winter. We noticed an abundance of wandering cats. That year, no less than 17 kittens were born on or near our property. We witnessed several get hit by cars and some just disappeared.

We took several to the nearest shelter (an hour away) and discovered they were overwhelmed with cats. They assured us they were a 'no kill' shelter but we later read in the paper that many animals had to be destroyed because of overcrowding and disease. Our hearts were broken and we were filled with guilt.

Vowing to never take another kitten to the shelter, we began trapping and neutering (or spaying) any cat we caught and rescuing kittens whenever possible. And The House Full Cat Sanctuary was born.

Since that time we have rescued and adopted out several kittens, spayed and neutered many cats, and provided a loving home for those who needed it. Our cat sanctuary also takes in cats whose owners have died, gone to a nursing home or can no longer live with their pet, and either have no family or the family is unable to care for the cat.

We built an outdoor 'kitty paddock' so they would have more room and get to enjoy the fresh air. The special fencing prevents them from climbing up and over. They get to play in the grass, chase bugs, and lounge on the cat trees. They have free access to it through several pet doors.

Inside, there are lots of places for the cats to climb and hide and there is never a shortage of human companionship for the cats.

We decided to develop this website about our cat sanctuary to help other multiple cats owners learn ways to make living with lots of cats a bit easier. Proceeds from our website help support our ongoing efforts to rescue unwanted cats and to continue our spay and neuter efforts. This site is not about us (the people) but is all about the cats and the things they have taught us along the way. Our ultimate dream is that no cat be left homeless and our sanctuary is just one step toward achieving that dream!
