7month old neutered male - should i get him a play mate?

i have a 7month old netured male, whom i love dearly, he is an indoor kitty, and seems very happy with this (tons of toys, climbing areas etc etc, but i feel bad fr him being on his own whilst i am at work. do you think i should get him a friend? if so a kitten(8/12 weeks) or a rescue older kitten (same sort of age he is) ???

RESPONSE:

You should only get another cat because YOU want another cat. Cats are solitary by nature and usually have no problem being alone. If he was unhappy, he would be destroying your house while you were at work, then driving you crazy with his need for attention the minute you got home. Since you say he seems happy and are not having any behaviorial problems, don't worry about him needing company.
If you do get another cat, another kitten his age or younger would probably work fine. Just focus on personality compatability. In other words, get a kitten with a similar temperment to the kitten you already have.
