5-year-old cat has started peeing on the carpet

I have 5 cats ( 4 females, 1 male). They are all spayed and neutered. My 5-year-old male has started peeing on the carpet and I don't know why. I have never had any litter box issues with them before. I think he peed on the carpet the first time because the litter box was too messy for him that particular day, but I have since kept their 2 boxes religiously clean, at least twice a day. I don't know if he still smells the urine and that's why he's continuing to pee there. I am having the carpet professionally (and expensively) cleaned tomorrow and I'm hoping that will solve the problem, but what if it doesn't? There has been no changes in his environment and I don't think he's sick. Please help! I have to get him to stop! I can not afford to re-carpet.
RESPONSE:
It could very well be that he still smells his urine in that spot. Just because we can't smell it doesn't mean the cat can't. That is why using a specialized cleaner designed to get out cat urine odor is so important! Let us know if the carpet cleaning doesn't help.
